The International Propeller Club of the United States Selects

David Vitter (R-LA) as 2010 recipient of its prestigious “Salute to

Congress Award.”

The International Propeller Club of the United States is pleased to announce that Senator David Vitter, (R – LA) has been selected to receive the Club’s 2010 “Salute to Congress Award”. Senator Vitter will be the 26th Recipient of this award.  As a member of three Senate Committees having significant jurisdiction over the maritime industry in the United States and internationally, the Senator is well positioned to recognize the industry’s importance to our economy and its role as an important asset for our military.

The Award will be presented to the Senator on April 27th at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.  Senator Vitter joins an impressive list of Members of Congress who have received the award having demonstrated consistent support for the United States-Flag Merchant Marine and the maritime industry in the United States.

Senator Vitter was born in New Orleans in 1961.  He received a B.A. from Harvard University in 1983, a B.A. from Oxford University in 1985, as a Rhodes Scholar, and a Juris Doctor from the Tulane University Law School in 1988.

He practiced law and was an adjunct professor of law at Loyola University in New Orleans.  He was a member of the Louisiana House of representatives from 1992 to 1999, when he entered  The U.S. House of Representatives, representing the First Congressional District of Louisiana from 1999 - 2004.  He and his wife Wendy, a former prosecutor, have three daughters, Sophie, Lise, and Airey, and a son, Jack. 

Vitter serves on the Senate Committee on Armed Services, where he is the Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, and a member of Subcommittee on Personnel and the Subcommittee on Sea Power, the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, where he serves on the Subcommittees on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard and on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety and Security, and the Committee on Environment and Public Works Where he serves on the Subcommittees on Clean Air and Nuclear Safety and on Transportation and Infrastructure

 The Salute to Congress Dinner is the maritime industry’s most prestigious and anticipated event in the Nation’s Capital through which the Propeller Club and its members show our sincere gratitude to those Members of Congress who champion the mission and goals of our organization, our diverse industry and our nation.  400 people will be in attendance to honor Senator Vitter, including members of Congress, Executive Branch officials, leaders from the maritime industry and Propeller Club members from throughout the United States.

The first Salute to Congress Award was presented to Speaker Thomas “Tip” O’Neill in 1984.  Recent recipients have included Congressman Jim Oberstar,  (D-MN), then Ranking Member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Congressman Ike Skelton, Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Duncan Hunter, (R-CA) former Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Senator Ernest Hollings (D-SC), then Ranking Member of the Senate Commerce Committee and Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK), Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and Congressman Don Young (R-AK), former Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Congressman Gene Taylor (R-MS) was the 2008 honoree.  A complete list of the previous recipients is attached.
