2011 International Propeller Club Awards
Leaders of the Club and the maritime industry were recognized at the Propeller Club’s 86th Annual Convention, held in Le Havre, France, in October.
Richard D. Steinke, the outgoing Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach, Calif., was named the Propeller Club’s 2011 Maritime Person of the Year for his more than two decades of service to the port authority, including 14 years in his current position. Under his leadership, the Port of Long Beach nearly doubled cargo volume and launched a $4 billion capital improvement plan. He implemented a pioneering Green Port Policy, including the successful Clean Trucks Program, which led to a reduction in pollution from short-haul trucks serving the port. He has served as Chairman of the American Association of Port Authorities and the California Association of Port Authorities and on the board of the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority and the Harbor Association of Industry and Commerce.
Alexander M. Giles, a member of the Propeller Club Port of Baltimore, is the 2011 Propeller Club Member of the Year. Alex was cited for his leadership of the 2008 Convention, held in Baltimore, his past service as that chapter’s Port President, and for his service on this year’s ad hoc Litigation Committee and as chair of the Executive Search Committee in 2010-2011. Alex has also been elected to serve as the International Treasurer for 2011-2012.
The Port of Le Havre, France, received the 2011 Propeller Club Port of the Year award at the final luncheon of the convention in recognition of their service to the club in hosting only the third-ever European convention of the International Propeller Club. The Board of Governors also passed a resolution expressing its appreciation to the Port for its hospitality.
